Today The Afghan Whigs released their new single ‘Algiers‘, the first taste from a new album ‘Do To The Beast‘. I’m a long-term follower of the Whigs and singer Greg Dulli‘s many bands and projects. This guy knows how to write and tune and rock. He’s also got a tough guy attitude on him and a firey passion for new and exciting music. I’ve discovered a lot of great bands and artists from him, such as David Axelrod and Van Hunt. Greg’s a serious music fan and he brought a really fresh perspective to rock when The Afghan Whigs formed in the 1980s.
The Afghan Whigs reformed in 2012 and this new album is the first in 16 years. I hope it’s a good ‘un. Dulli went on to do many good things in his other long term band The Twilight Singers and the Gutter Twins with Mark Lanegan.
I was reminded today how great the band were when I got home today and fired up a few old songs. These guys rocked. As for new single ‘Algiers‘, it’s a welcome return. It’s chilled and has a cool western flavour (perhaps the video has led me to make this observation). The band has changed slightly since they reformed and there are some cool new band mates on board. Read the Rollling Stone article here for all the goss. Greg sounds driven and excited. I hope they come to Europe again.

Here’s one of my favourite Whigs songs:
If you like what you hear…check out Whigs, all fired up last year at SXSW Festival with special guest Usher. The band sound amazing.
