The first music of 2014 that I’m listening to is the new album from Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks. I am longtime fan of Malkmus’ music and there’s plenty of good tunes to be found throughout his 6 album post-Pavement solo career. My favourite is most definitely 2008s ‘Real Emotional Trash’ – great album title, great tunes and his jams often go way out there – good job Steve. Since then he’s released ‘Mirror Traffic’ (produced by Beck) in 2011 and now ‘Wig Out At Jagbags’.
The two main draws of Malkmus’ music for me is his voice and his guitar style – I love his lazy Californian schtick – it makes for rockin’, laid back music. Anyway, I’ve just started listening to ‘Wig Out…’, so I’ll give you the lowdown in a few days on if it’s good or not. Sounds jammy to me so far. Below is a performance of first single ‘Lariat‘:
Steve’s just made an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show – check out his jams from the performance below. The song ‘Stick Figures In Love’ is actually from his last album and I’m not sure why he played it – I guess he knew it was gonna rock. Have a listen here:
Here’s a clip of Steve playing ‘Tigers’ off the last album on the streets of his home at the time, Berlin.
