I must have been in a good mood last Friday as I wouldn’t normally give much time to a band like Let’s Wrestle. I’m not saying I’m your typical closed-minded music snob type, but I have learnt from experience that indie guitar bands from London more often than not leave me feeling cold. I can’t remember how I came across Let’s Wrestle, but needless to say I found myself listening to their 2014 released self-titled third album in work.
The album is OK. Initially I was drawn to the tunes, which reference some rad bands like Pavement etc. They’re not bad tunes either, but one thing that stands out (or not in this case) is the production. Let’s Wrestle, on record at least, peddle a typically flat lo-fi indie sound which does nothing for the kind of tuneful music they’re playing. Songs such as the single Codeine & Marshmallows and opener Rain Needs Revolution are pretty cool, but these tunes need to shoved in your face. I know it’s a style thing but I wish these guys had made a power-pop album. I can hear definitely hear a touch of Jason Falkner in their music. He’s one of my favourite songwriters – his rock leaps out of the speakers, these songs don’t. What do you think? Check out the single below:
Pretty cool right? So that you can compare and contrast, here’s a Let’s Wrestle-esque JF song:
Wham! Great rock huh? I hope you enjoyed.
