If only all ‘urban folk’ sounded like Hefner…

Last week my cycle to work every day was made brighter thanks to a band I have just been turned onto by Spotify.  I’m not sure if it says anything about the world that my latest band discovery was all thanks to a computer programme but whatever, thinking about that sort of thing doesn’t get you anywhere.  The band in question is Hefner, a cool bunch of English lads who used to play and record music in the late 90s/early 2000s.  They make an excellent slacker punk sound which reminds me of the Modern Lovers or perhaps early Blur.  They were favourites of John Peel – another reason to pay attention to these guys.

Check out their best song ‘Hymn For The Cigarettes‘ below, rock songwriting and dynamics in music don’t get much better than this.  If you like what you hear make a beeline for the album ‘The Fidelity Wars‘ which is where the song is from.  They have a few ‘Hymn…’ songs (coffee, alcohol) that are packed with thoughtful and funny lyrics.  I’m still getting to know these guys, join me in the discovery…
